Vegas was great. The hotels were amazing. They were huge and really well done. What was even more amazing was that there were hookers in the casino as we were walking back to our rooms. The Vegas strip is like Disney except that it has gambling and hookers. :-)
Some pictures later.
Posted by jherr at February 28, 2004 10:35 AMGood Vegas trip report. However, I don't understand why you think the strip was so short; short compared to what? Did you go far North as the Stratosphere? If you've ever tried walking the full strip, I don't think you'd say it was short afterwards.
Also, interesting comment about the hookers. The sex "industry" is alive and well in Vegas. Strictly speaking, prostitution is illegal in Clark County, which is where Vegas is (Nevada's state laws allow each county in the state to determine whether or not they want to allow prostitution; if they do, it must be done in a state-licensed brothel). That said, Vegas is pretty much a "turn the other cheek" kind of place, with the underlying rule being "you take care of me, and I'll take care of you". Also, "what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas". So, the ho-tels allow the hookers to hang out in the bars; it's good for business. Better to allow the high rollers to hang out in our bar with the hookers, than go to a different casino to get some action, they think. I think it's kind of a tacit understanding that a lot of people go to Vegas for more than just playing cards/slot machines. Did you know that it was recently found out that the number one reason people leave the strip in search of other entertainment is the strip clubs? Yep, and the strip clubs have been catching a lot of political heat as a result. Some casinos like MGM have even started to have quasi-strip clubs inside their own nightclubs (Studio 54). Sex sells.
Ooops....
I hope my comment about why people really go to Vegas didn't get you in any trouble.... LOL...
No worries.
I found the strip short when I was driving it. I suppose the question is, 'What is the strip?' If the strip is between the convention center and the leaving Vegas sign, then I think it's pretty short. But if you take it into downtown Vegas, it's really long.
You are right about the walking though. If I had to walk it, I would think very differently. My night of walking around was just between Caesers, the Bellagio, Paris and Bally's and my feet were pretty sore by the end.
