I'm completely in favor of gay marriage but I have to wonder if now is the right time to be driving this issue so hard. We have a White House to take back from a madman and his gruesome administration of evil. Now it looks as if we have handed him an issue to run his entire election around in order to avoid sticky questions like his vendetta war in Iraq and his utter failure in his economic package. (Or should I say his success at subsidizing the rich while the other 99% of American's suffer.) So while I am all for anyone of consenting age getting married if they want to, I have to wonder why it's critical to bring this issue up now.
Posted by jherr at March 3, 2004 07:30 PMI'm really not worried about this being a bad time for this issue. I don't think it will effect peoples votes. If Bush continues to try and please the uber-right with the constitutional amendment idea, then he may loose some of his more moderate supporters. I think the democrats will weather this issue. Its only fair that all citizens be given the right to have "Life Liberty and Pursuit of happiness" If the religious right has such a problem with Gays marring than they shouldn't let them get married in their own churches.
The big one will be if Osma is found before november. That would probably guarantee Bush the election because he would finally be able to claim victory on the front.
Posted by: lefty Lucy at March 3, 2004 09:09 PMI agree totally that people everyone is entitled to get married if they want to. I've just been around long enough to see that some issues can get straightened out later, for example, in the middle of a Democratic presidency. ;-)
You are right about Osama. I think that's why they have stepped up the offensive. It's also why they let the Pakistani researcher off the hook. That's one of the first things this administration has done that I agree with (in hindsight). They can persecute a single researcher all they want, or they can get a blank check to crush Al Qaeda in Pakistan. Which one would you choose?
