I don't think you can win it.

George is such an inspiring leader. He always knows the right thing to say. Like in an interview on the Today Show, when he was asked "Can we win [the war on terror]?"

"I don't think you can win it. But I think you can create conditions so that the -- those who use terror as a tool are -- less acceptable in parts of the world."

I've left in the whole quote (because I'm a Democrat and believe in honesty in reporting), but the effect is just as demoralizing any way you frame it.

Let's see how it plays:

George, what do you say to the soldiers in Iraq: "I don't think you can win it."

George, what do you say to the soldiers in Afghanistan: "I don't think you can win it."

To the families of the soldiers: "I don't think you can win it."

How about to the families who have lost loved ones: "I don't think you can win it."

How about to the people of Iraq: "I don't think you can win it."

How about to the families of the 9/11 victims: "I don't think you can win it."

To Osama Bin Ladin: "I don't think [we] can win it."

To the Americans that support the war: "I don't think you can win it."

To our allies who support the war: "I don't think you can win it."

Whatever you think about Bush. That he is a good man. That he is a religious man. That he is compassionate. That he is conservative. Be that as it may, you must understand that he is first and foremost the leader of the military of this country. To get us into a war and then to say "I don't think you can win it." is simply inexcusable. It's demoralizing to say the least, and probably far worse. To use the words of the Republicans who rip on Kerry, it's giving aid and comfort to our enemies. The only difference is that Kerry said this 35 years ago and Bush said it two days ago.

This will now be the centerpoint to my opposition of Bush. This phrase sums it up for me. He is out of touch. He is incompetent. He is out of control of his administration and his country.

Update: I looked for coverage of this story in any way shape or form on Fox News on the Internet (I refuse to watch it on TV). It was not to be found. So much for fair and balanced.
