Man it's early...
We're on a roll again, Berlin aint bad, Gore is great, Man our D is good, My Canes kick ass, |
I thought the canes looked anemic at best. While they do typically play down to their competition, the Coogs ran some quick outs and slants that just had the defense running, trying to catch up. Bad thing for Houston is that they run the spread, which, when you get down into the red zone, means generally settling for 3.
The defense is not as good as years past, plain and simple. Good to be sure, but not dominating.
The offense is what is so disappointing. They re-tooled the whole damn thing to fit Berlin's style and he's still not coming through. To his credit, his offensive line is not strong. Also to his credit, he also covered up and took the sack instead of throwing idiotic passes or losing the ball (okay, he did once). He can't complete the long ball. If he has more than two reads--or, heaven forbid, go back to an original read, he gets flustered and gets happy feet. I'm still not a believer in him. See the two or three balls he threw into double coverage--forcing the pass? Of course, they were dropped (another problem) but he should know better. Hell, if I can read that defense and know what's coming, he sure as hell should be able to do so!
Mr. Moss had a game! Gore didn't play most of the game--it seemed Ty Moss' job to lose last night.
I was pleasantly surprised at the number of Cane fans at the game last night. Our whole section was filled with orange and green as well as the section below us. The cheerleaders were on the opposite end of the field, cheering to what amounted to about 75 fans. Had they come closer to mid-field, they would have had some participants!:)

That being said, there were two strange things about Houston last night. First, they were throwing some really funky stuff around, and second, they lasted well into the second half. I don't think Virginia will play that funky stuff. And the other teams are usually dead on their feet by the second half.
I thought Gore was good last night, but you are right, Moss was good as well.
My concern, as you point out, is the deep ball. Dorsey has the deep ball cold. Whatever Berlin is doing he just seems to be out throwing his receivers by about 8-10 yards consistently. There wasn't that much pressure last night, he should have connected.
Anyway, all that being said, we are still 3-0 and that feels good.
