I'm not a big Oprah fan but this segment on a man being seperated from his dog just about killed me. I would have done anything in the world for Ripley or Culum, and there is absolutely no way I would be seperated from one of them by some government order. If they are forcing people out then they should at the very least allow them to take their pets.
Posted by jherr at September 7, 2005 04:06 PMHow did you miss the little boy and Snowball? The poor little guy had his little white fluffy dog with him in the Superdomr, but when it came time to get on the bus, they basically ripped the dog from his arms as he was being pulled onto the bus. It was horrible. From sources around here involved in rescue, it seems like a great many of the pets that were in the dome are now here in shelters around the city and foster homes. We are also hosting the animals who were able to survive in the shelters--dogs, cats and rabbits who managed to swim and stay on top of whatever they could to survive.
Posted by: eigga49 at September 8, 2005 07:42 AMAs heartbreaking as these stories are, and with all due respect, if there is only room on the bus for either your neighbor's child or your dog, are you really going to fight for the dog at that point?
Posted by: bsaz at September 8, 2005 08:11 AMI get your point, but first, this isn't 'last seat on the bus' time. There are at most 10K people left in the city and they are taking them out pretty slowly.
Second, this is something the FEMA folks have to handle. My guess is that pets are the first or second most popular reason for why people are still staying around the city. If they want people to leave then they are going to need to find a way to make the pet situation work so that people don't loose their pets.
BTW, in response to Missy, I didn't see the Snowball thing, but I heard that the kid cried so much he vomited.
Posted by: jherr at September 8, 2005 12:56 PMAnd you would feel confident in this FEMA administrator if a tornado were to come a blow away your town in the dead of night? With only the shirt on your back and your family you would trust this FEMA director? I don't think so.
BTW, 13%, where did you get that? I have 58% disapproving of Bush's handling of this. I don't know any reasonable poll that would ask a question like "Do you think Bush is to blame for this? Yes or No."
Obviously there is blame to go around. But blame for a federal screwup of a federal disaster should go primarily to the federal officials involved. In other words, your precious president and his arabian horse judging crony "Brownie". A man who didn't even know that people were at the convention center until Thursday when it was all over the networks on Wednesday.
