Katherine Harris update

Katherine Harris is staying in her Senate race where she is light years behind. Now she is sinking her own personal fortune into it. Awesome! This is like finding out that the slow motion train reck I've been watching for months just got a couple more miles of track. Choo choo!!

The fight against abortion has already had a huge effect on my life.

I work in labor and delivery on the Upper east Side of Manhattan, a relativelt liberal and wealthy location. At our hospital there is one doctor who will do 2nd trimester abortions.

Thus, if a pregnant woman does amniocentesis (at 14 weeks) and gets a positive result, which is a bad thing, or an anomaly is found on a 20 week sonogram, she is referred to that doctor. If he doesn't take her insurance and she cannot pay out of pocket, then she is sent to us to have labor induced with Cytotec.

The risk of uterine rupture with a Cytotec induction is higher than the risk of uterine perforation during a D & E. It also involves living through labor and giving birth, rather than going to sleep for the procedure.

Note that all but one of the doctors do amnios and sonograms; then they dump the patients after the bad news because, well, they just don't DO that.

Oops, wrong post...must be the evil interface's fault!

Yeah, I broke the convention and now I mess everybody up.

Your story here is brutal. It's a standard procedure. The baby is probably fundamentally disabled. And the mother has to go through an extremely traumatic procedure just because of a social choice on the behalf of the doctor. Horrible.

Another theme I saw in the negative comments on that DIY Abortion post was how they always blamed the women. She was a slut. She should have avoided being raped. She should have been abstinent (by not being raped). She should... She should... She should... It's always the womans fault and it's always her who should take he brunt of the penalty.

And it's always old white men who are behind the anti-abortion movement. I'm telling you, it's all about returning women to their status in the 50s; subservient to men.
