Walk The Line

We watched Walk The Line last night. I found it boring and predictable, though well acted. How many movies about singers/artists do we need to see that follow this pattern. Abusive childhood. Gifted in their art. Initial success. Spoils success through drugs/alcohol/womanizing/etc. Gets whipped into shape by their soul mate. Lives happily ever after. It's not that I have a problem with Cash. I love the man in black. He is one of the few country singers I do like. But I just find this formula boring.

So, real life is boring? Or overcoming odds is boring? I appreciate wanting some escapism in your film, but, surely, you knew what this movie was about. If you didn't want to see the "formula" then why did you bother?

He didn't really. I ordered it from pay per view over a week ago and when there wasn't anything else on on Saturday night, I insisted we try it. It was one of the few Oscar films I hadn't seen yet.

I dunno, but I think you know what you are signing up for when you see a biopic. I thought the performances were great. I love the scene when June is cornered by a fan who is pissed that she got divorced.
Plus the music itself was fantastic.

I ALMOST cried when he sang "Folsom Prison Blues" for Sam Phillips. Phillips was a brash and hard old codger - pretty intimidating the couple times I met him. But that scene was beautiful. Dead on and thrilling.

Yeah, I'm tired of the Behind The Music stories, too. Is artistic success in this country really that formulaic?

I see the points here. I really do like Johnny Cash. I have a best of of him in my car. My problem with this film is the story. Going with the model of artist gets popular, artist does drugs, artist hits bottom, artist cleans up, artists lives happily ever after is boring. And there are a lot of ways to approach a life as interesting as Cash's. Why couldn't they try and focus on his controversial side, or his uplifting side. The only hint of that was the letters from prison. I wanted to hear more about that.

Let me put it anotheer way. I watched a two hour movie about a man and all I came away with was that he did pills and then stopped doing pills.

If it helps I have the exact same complaint about The Aviator.
