Another reason to by a dyson!

Apparently a recent article in a English paper reported that men are twice as likely to vacuum if you have a Dyson!

Article from Figure Magazine, page 81 of the July/August 2005 issue.

the good and the bad

i managed to sleep through the night - that's the good
letting the pain meds leave my system have been the bad. I can't even swallow spit this morning, a whole side of my face is excruciating. Oh sweet Codine, come and take the pain away.

Saturday morning update

i'm enjoying my first coffee/slushie of the day and Megan and I are watching "shrek" we'll she's watching i'm snoozing, drinking and blogging through it.

It hurts like hell to swallow fluid, so I can't even imagine eating ever again!

A dear friend left me a Jamba Juice gift card in our mail box and i'm looking forward to something yummy and smooth from them.

Under the knife...

So its all set. When Megan woke up from her nap we headed up to hang with Pam and Yvonne and then she'll spend the night. Then I'm up early for a 7:30 surgery time. I like my doctor and I've read enough to know i'll be ok, but i'm still nervous. I can't sleep, but is that really surprising? I'll blog when I can and I'm sure Jack will keep anyone posted that wants updates.

loosing the nap and yet

Megan wants very much to forgo the nap. But what ends up happening is by the 3rd day of no napping (either by choice or by her just not sleeping but playing for the 2 hours she's in bed) she is a major cranky child. She napped Sunday but refused monday and then tuesday well was poker night so I didn't even try to get her to nap (cause I wanted her to go down by 8) but last night at dinner she cried because she wanted more of this, less of that, and then because she wanted a bath, but didn't want to leave the table with everyone else still there. Once in the bath she cried because she wanted to fill Sadie's cup with water, wanted to keep Sadie's cup of water to play with and didn't want me to give Sadie a cup of water.

(side note.... Ripley started drinking "tub water" years ago when ever Jack or I would take a bath. If we didn't supply a cup of water she would just climb into the tub. While Sadie never joined us, she wanted anything Ripley had and that included a cup of water while someone bathed. When Megan entered the family and started baths in the tub, both dogs would line up for water. Since Ripley's passing Sadie has continued the tradition. Oso hasn't figured it out and really could care less - he tasted the warm bath water once and has never been back.)

Now back to the story at hand... after 15 mins in the bath and the water quickly turning chilly, Megan cried because I cleaned up her toys and took her out of the bath and wrapped her in a warm towel. Then she cried because she wanted the castle PJ's and didn't see them in the drawer (i'd already taken them out) then she tried to tell me something about nap or net or something but I didn't understand and when I offered to help her dress, well she cried again. I left her alone to dress and she came out of her room, fully clothed in PJ's and surprisingly happy. That was it... once we started reading books, drinking milk, hugging everyone good night (Jack, Mel, and the 2 dogs) brushing teeth, Dancing to the first song, cuddling and singing to the second song and then pretending to sleep to the 3rd one she was happy just knowing I think that bed was coming.

So today she'll nap... and tonight should be smoother sailing.

Clean Money

I just signed the online petition for the California Clean Money and Fair Elections Act, letting Governor Schwarzenegger and our legislators know that we demand that they fix our broken campaign finance system!

I think what the California Clean Money Campaign is doing is extremely important. Clean Money public financing of campaigns will hold politicians accountable to the voters because voters pay for political campaigns rather than big money contributors. This idea is making things better in other states and California deserves it too.

So check it out, sign the online petition if you live in California, let me know what you think, and pass it on!

play hard...sleep hard

its 9 am and Megan hasn't made a peep, not a stir. Yesterday Pam and Yvonne came down while Josephine and Megan played we took turns seeing The Island which was enjoyable entertainment. Megan and Josephine apparently swam hard and ate lunch while Pam and I were gone because when we got back they were both napping. Jack and Yvonne headed out and Josephine woke up like over an hour later. Megan shortly followed. Then after Thai dinner the parents played a fun game of poker (fun meaning free) and Yvonne who was first out of the table wrangled the girls in the bath. Megan was actually asleep soon after I put her down at 9 which given the nap I just didn't expect. ...so now its 9 am and she's still asleep. I love it when those 2 get to play.

update on these guys

*

The female had six puppies last weekend and has been taken in by a rescue group so she can raise her pups until they are old enough to be fixed and adopted. The male has a waiting list on people who want to adopt him from the shelter so, while their previous home never even looked for them, both are going to be well taken care of.

American Heros

A great story of a US Soldier who survived a sniper attack and then once the sniper was secured gave medical care to that sniper. Our boys (and women) over there are doing a fantastic job. They should be supported 100%.
Even when we disagree with the war, like alot of American's do with Iraq, our soldiers are out there and need to know the American people are behind you!

My thanks to my friend Heather for highlighting the great story.

Operator error

I know I haven't shared my love for all things Dyson in a while, basically i've been thinking that the Dyson wasn't all that, since while it was incredible in the beginning, lately it hasn't been doing that great of a job. The wand was nolonger the powerful hose that could suck a cobweb off the sealing from 5 feet away! I just wasn't sure why - and figured that with age it would just not be as powerful.

Cut to this morning - Jack and Megan and Oso are out getting bagels and i'm using the time to vacuum. I get to the kitchen and just can't get the wand to suck up a coffee bean - which use to be an easy suck. I turn it off and start taking it apart.

In the tube at the base of the wand where it bends and enters the vacuum proper if found a ball point pen, a water bottle cap, 2 small farm animal toys, a wad of dog hair, and who knows what else. I removed the big pieces, put the vacuum back together turned it on and whooosh the hair and stuff got sucked right through. I opened it all back up again and sure enough the hose was clear.

So the pen I remember vacuuming like 2 months ago. I looked for it in the tube proper but the vacuum was till sucking at the time so I figured I didn't actually vacuum the pen but instead had imagined it!

I spent some time cleaning the brush which like all good roller brushes was covered with hair and string, and then I put the vacuum back together, retraced my steps and well i'm back in love with my Dyson. The amount of stuff it sucked up was amazing.

Lesson learned - when you see a pen get sucked into a vacuum don't assume your seeing things, when you vacuum doesn't seem to be sucking as well as it had, don't assume its just getting older.

File this one under stupid Lori Tricks...

Tonsils

I have Chronic cryptic tonsillitis. I've had it for years and finally went to a doctor about it in January of 2002, but got pregnant with Megan in February and have just been putting up with them ever since. So now I'm having them out - well not now but in a few weeks. I went back to the same doctor last month and he agreed it was time. The trouble is I've had now a month to stress about the pain.

When I had my gallbladder out I went from thinking I was having horrible gas, to having my sister in law Jen, who was visiting say that's what she thought I had, to the ER after passing out from the pain, to surgery all in a matter of days. I didn't have time to google and read about other peoples stories and complications.

Its having too much information. There is a fine line between being an informed patient and knowing too much. I found today a detailed description of the surgery and it kind of freaked me out. Normally I'd link to such things but honestly I don't want to go back and get the address. I can rationally think ok I need this, in the long run I'll feel better, and I survived gallstone attacks and labor, I can survive pain. But then I think - its gonna hurt its gonna hurt its gonna hurt!

Course I woke up this morning to a sore throat and a stiff achy jaw cause they are infected again and its time to have my tonsils out!

Surgery is planed for a friday and Megan is going to get her first sleep over at a friends thursday night. Then Jack has the whole weekend to watch her while I recover and take pain meds, I'll be back on full time duty monday but reserve the right to let my kid watch way to many movies if I feel like crap still. I'm sure i'll blog about it....so watch this space.

Battle of wills

The last couple days Megan has really been testing me and her own boundaries. Basically what ever I ask her to do like put on her shoes she refuses and waits to see what I'll do ....

so now this morning she has been sitting in a small chair in the kitchen with out making a sound for over 10 minutes. I told her she could get up only after she apologies and does the task I put to her.

We were off to a bad start this morning anyway because she didn't sleep well with out her blanket (not to Aunt Robin, Next time make 2 identical blankets so that when one needs to be washed the other back up is there!) Last night after she'd gone to bed she proceeded to remove all her pj's and put them on her big stuffed purple bear. Then her little ty green bear got wrapped in a pee soaked diaper. Then she stark naked peed in her bed and managed to soak her pillow as well as her blanket.

She is a sweet kid and I love her dearly but this week has been a heck of a test.

UPDATE - she lasted 12 minutes - I got a hug an I'm sorry mommy and her shoes are now on and she's ready to go

Chinese fortunes in bed

For a while now we've played the game of adding the words in bed to any and all fortunes from fortune cookies. I remember telling this to my mom years ago, after we ate at a restaurant in Ocala that is now gone. She laughed so hard when we all did it - it makes for some very funny fortunes.

Anyway last week while enjoying chinese take out with Mel and Jack, I did it again and got

"it is hard for an empty bag to stand up right" ... in bed

The best application ever.

Megan has been taking swimming lessons for the last week, with another to go for now (though I think I'm going to extend it for another couple of weeks) She absolutely loves the class as the following pictures can attest!

Strange days

Yesterday was a strange day indeed. I woke up to a broken toilet in our (the tank won't fill with water). The plumber is coming today but I had to play phone tag with them for most of the day to get that set. Sadie's $150 meds I'd opened wed evening smelled like cat pee and when i opened the reserve bottle from the same lot it too smelled so I had to run to the vet and return them, only they had no other so she's med free until they get a new batch in. Both of these odd, but even odder happening together.

But the strangest thing was After I put Megan down last nigh, I was installing Megan's carseat back in my car (we had my car serviced). I was accosted by two of the cutest little white dogs. I couldn't lock them in our side yard cause they escaped so I put them in my car and waited for the dog catcher. I do hope their owner finds them, or they go to a great home. they were so loveable.

Why I hate Union City 1 day a year

Because fireworks are legal ... "safe and Sane" ones and our entire neighbor hood sounds a war zone, and Sadie is scared, and Oso is freaking so much we had to slip him a tranquilizer (from his getting nails done collection) Our neighbors don't stick to the safe and Sane either. Jack and I went out for a quiet moment in the spa and were surrounded by a Fireworks show with out the music just laughing and glee from all the pyros. Before I realized our dogs were terrified I really didn't mind so much, but watching Oso run around the house and freak out to each load boom, has made me really hate living here and I am now looking for a new state with Sane fireworks laws.

Great send off....

I went to Barbara's hen night last night. And I had wonderful time. Part one was hanging out with family at a lovely B&B in Hollywood. We had a wonderful dinner, and Barbara opened up a few gifts (mine being the only "adult humor" one - alittle embarrassing but it was a "bachlorette" party! Then Some of the group headed off the a club where the party and gossiping continued. I enjoyed getting to know Barbara's friends and family. And I had taken a cab in Hollywood, so I took advantage of the night out and drank more than I had in years. It was a wonderful night.
