A Perfect Day...

Yesterday was just perfection.

First off I slept in. Jack and Megan had gone off to get Bagels. Once I did a few chores, I took Megan to the farmers market where we sampled the best strawberries, and drank some fresh squeezed OJ. We took our purchases home and headed over to lunch with Jack and then onto our favorite nursery.

We came home and I planted the garden. Megan played in her kiddie pool and Jack sat in the shade of our gazebo and did some work. It was just beautiful afternoon - and I have a well planted clean garden to show for it. I plan on doing a little more later today, and at some point buying some soil for the last bed so that we can have a place to grow our pumpkins for October.

After cleaning up, Jack and I went out for an incredible evening. First up was dinner at a place we heard of at a party a few weeks back - The Fat Lady in Oakland. Easily one of the best restaurants i've been to in a few years. It was the first of many visits i'm sure. THen we headed over the Paramount Theater to see The Swell Season which if you don't know is the music of GLEN HANSARD - vocals/guitar and MARKETA IRGLOVA - vocals/piano who were in the movie Once.

The opening act was Liam of Hot House flowers with Rónán Ó Snodaigh of Kilá. Their music was beautiful and haunting. Then the Concert started and Glen came out and did his first number away from the mics and with his guitar unplug and was just amazing - gave me goosebumps. Then he plugged back in and the rest of the concert was song after song with some of the funniest banter and explanations for songs i've ever heard.

I had tried to buy tickets for this concert before but it sold out so fast, then a local radio station was giving out tickets and so I tried but then I gave up. A couple of weeks ago Jack surprised me with tickets, not knowing how hard I had tried to get tickets, but know how much I'd loved the movie. It was a perfect surprise.

Exhausted... but in a good way

I may appear grumpier then usual, but its just that i'm so incredibly exhausted. I've been volunteering at Megan's school alot lately - this week its the book fair. I finish that today with another 3 hours of moving books around, and doing math in my head - Last night I ran a cash register for 3 hours, and it didn't do the whole change calculation for you - so I did that on the spot in my head - it felt good to stretch those brain muscles, but after the first hour I was tired of it - and grateful for anyone who came to my register with a credit card!

I'm also tired because I'm suddenly doing everything around the house. Jack's wrist is better, but he shouldn't over do it - so for example, I'm cooking dinner, and cleaning up after, I'm doing all the laundry and dealing with the trash. On sunday I actually spent several hours just cleaning because the little tasks I do daily had been pushed aside during the surgery week. I just didn't sleep last week because of the stress of it all.

SO this morning I'm in Megan's class for a few hours volunteering and then I head over to the book fair to help with the after-sale and clean up. I'm not complaining, not one bit - I love it and really I'm so grateful, i'm able to spend the time helping make Megan's school wonderful.

History Lessons...

I majored in History in Collage, and so i've always had a soft spot for historical movies. I particularly love when they get me motivated to read more about it. So tonight I refreshed on Henry's six wives (mostly about Anne Boleyn) after reading up on John Adam's and Thomas Jefferson's friendship. I also was appalled to read about Nabby Adam's surgery for Breast cancer. That poor woman really suffered.

Only a few years ago I would have had to make a point of going to the library to look something up that I saw on TV. Now thanks to the likes of wikipedia I have instant gratification.

Good end to a bad week

Well really not a bad week - we just had Jack's wrist to deal with. With the worst of the broken wrist behind us, We had a really lovely saturday.

We started the day with a trip to the farmers market. It was chilly but the produce was fresh and the local hospital had a chef there who made a fresh salad and some bread with cilantro pesto. Megan even dared to sample the pesto and loved it, so I'm making my own version to go with our dinner tonight.

After a quick lunch at a sandwich we enjoyed "Seussical the musical" put on by a local Elementary in Fremont. The kids did a great job. One of our playgroup friends big sister did the best performance as Gertrude - and has a future in theatre if she wants it.

It really just was a great day. And now after our fresh breadrolls come out of the oven we'll have a great dinner.

Tomorrow , will be one week since Jack's fall and while so much has changed, really nothing has.

What a weekend....

We have had just beautiful weather. Warm and sunny. Saturday after running some errands We went to the pool and had our first swim of the year. We ended with a great bbq at some friends. Really a perfect day.

Sunday dawns and promises as much pleasure as saturday. We head out for breakfast and pass a local park that Megan doesn't remember going to - Great we say lets go after breakfast. During breakfast we decide to add the dogs to the plan and Jack decides he's going to try out some new roller skates he acquired too.

We get there and all is well. Jack gets on his new skates and Oso is just beside himself wanting to be with Jack, so I (stupidly) offer Oso to Jack. He heads off while LIttle Guy Megan and myself stay at the play structure.

Next thing I know Oso is loose and a guy is yelling for me to come over - Jack has fallen. Oso runs right to me and by the time I get over to where Jack is The guy had taken off his skates for him. It was obvious he was hurt but it wasn't until I got to him that I saw his wrist was completely messed up.

Somehow I get him in the car, the dogs in the car and Megan in the car. I run back by the house and drop off the dogs and head straight to the ER. The get him in, and I get ahold of our neighbor who comes and gets Megan, and then we wait - for the Ortho Surgeon . who turns out to be the same one that treated me last year for my broken foot.

It as suspected is a bad break. He'll have to have surgery but the Ortho wanted to wait and do it out patient. He numbed it and reset it - put it in a splint and wrapped it. We'll know more tomorrow when we go in to see the Ortho guy and get the surgery planned. For now he'll just take it easy and rest - with lots of pain meds. Poor guy is really in pain.

A little advice if you please...

In an effort to reduce our "Carbon Footprint", I went out and bought a hills hoist - the aussie term for "rotary clothes line". I've managed to dry a few loads with it, and noticed the towels now scratch my back nicely. But as I put my flannel PJ bottoms on last night I realized I needed help - how do you make fabric like Terry Cloth and flannel not scratch the skin off when they haven't been machine dried? My legs (and other areas) would appreciate any input you may have.

The funny thing is I did use one of these before during the The California Energy Crisis but as soon as the Crisis passed I threw the darn thing in the shed until we cleaned out the shed and I sent it to the dump. Now I've bought another - with the mind that I would use it during the summer as my primary dryer. But I can't for the life of me remember how I made the towels enjoyable- with out using the electric dryer.

Why i'm giving up starbucks again...

It has only been a month since I last forgo starbucks, and since i've been limiting myself to once or twice a week. I'm giving them up again because I had a rude experience there and well It was a bit of a final straw.

On my way to Megan's Karate class thursday afternoon, I pulled into the drive through because I was craving an Iced Coffee. When I got to the window I placed my order ... Iced Grande Decaf please.

The reply I got was - We can't do that!. What do you mean? We can do regular Iced but not decaf - What ? I say come again? he repeats it. I don't want a frappacino I just want iced Decaf coffee. He then says - look I know what you want and we can't do it.

Its on your menu - right under drip - Iced Coffee - Regular or decaf. - NO he yells its not. I'm looking right at it. Do you have ice? I ask... yes he says... Do you have decaf coffee? ... Yes he says - so why the hell can't you put the two together and give me an Iced DECAF Coffee?

Because we aren't allowed. - FIne - Me and my money are leaving. and I drove through . As I went around the building I noticed an employee come out and go look at the menu - But for me that was it - I don't kindly to being told no when I'm reading it off the damn menu. I'm sure if I conplained to corporate I'd get an apology and maybe even a coupon for a freebie - but really this just reinforces to me that I need to give up starbucks once and for all. Its crazy to spend so much on coffee - when I make decent at home.

On a side - the very next day Megan had Gymnastics and I never did get my iced coffee - so I brewed some coffee - added Ice and was happy all the way to Gymnastics.
